This descriptive study was done to identify the need of extended educational opportunities and to develop a curriculum for Dental Hygienist-Bachelor Science of Nursing(BSN) Program.
For the study, dental hygienists who are working at dental clinic at present, were surveyed through a structured questionnaire, and professional group from dentists and professors in nursing and dental-hygiene were interviewed. Moreover, we reviewed the 5 diploma curricula of dental hygienist and the BSN program proposed by Red Cross College of Nursing. The data was analysed by frequencies, t-test, Pearson's correlation using 10.0 SPSS program.
The results were as follows :
1. The present diploma curricula for dental-hygeine were various from college to college in their credit distributions, and very few subjects were coincident to nursing curriculum.
2. The need for BS course was 99.1%. In the types of BS, the need level for Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene was 2.4±0.8, and Dental Hygienist-Bachelor Science of Nursing 1.7±1.1 measured by 3 point of Likert scale.
3. The respondents wanted BS program for self-development(36%), recognition in their educational background(24%), qualitative improvement of dental-hygeinist(35%), satisfaction for lifelong education(5%).
4. The main opinions of professional group for the desirable type of BS for graduated dental-hygeinist showed some dishammony between two professioal areas.
5. Considering the results, a curriculum for Dental Hygienist-Bachelor Science of Nursing Program of 3 years was developed, which is consisted of culture subjects of 16 credits, nursing major subjects of 110 credits, 126 credits in all.
On the basis of the results, the researchers recommend that the verification of the curriculum by various areas and an applicable method of the program should be considered.
